The slab, insulation and a conditioned space if you will work in it in July and January, enough electrical service for the tools — often a subpanel — good lighting, a wide door, and the plumbing if a sink or a bathroom is wanted. A shop that was built as a shell and then wired and insulated afterwards costs more than one built for its use.
Can a workshop or studio be built as a home office?
Yes, and it is one of the most common outbuildings now — a detached, insulated, conditioned room with power and data, separate from the house. It is smaller and simpler than a garage, it usually needs a permit, and it is worth doing to the standard of the house so it holds its value.
